What you are seeing there is Active Monitor checking the connection to make
sure your ftp server is still up. It happens roughly every 15 minutes.
While these do take up space, I wouldn't worry about it taking up a lot of
space, it's pure text, and the logs are rotated regularly.

As for the Books on SysAdmin, "Running Redhat Linux" published by O'Reilly is
very good as is "Unix System Administration Handbook" written by Nemeth,
Snyder, Seebass and Hein.
