IMO, POP before SMPTP isn't all that bad.

Agreed. But more and more ISPs are doing nasty things like only delivering
mail with a From: header that matches the user's account. Case in point -
verizon.net which is one of the biggest telcos in the US. I have had their
DSL service for over 2 years and I wasn't happy when they recently made this
change, but it's a fact.

Awesome idea. That is, if your ISP doesn't block port 25. Some ISPs do.
Or if you do portforwarding to get around that.
