Bad, bad, bad.
Some people will recommend POP before SMTP, but it's very kludgy, and
nasty. What's bad about using your dial-up ISP's smtp relay ?
Here's an idea, which is never really discussed. A 486 will be ample spec
to be a linux box in the corner of the office doing mail relay for you.
These machines can be run headless, so are very cheap. Linux is free, and
most distributions will configure a mail server to be run out of the box.
You could even flog these to your customers. :-)
