Good move; the GUI overwrites manual changes in order to respect the GPL.
I was wondering if there's a FAQ for this list, and if so, how to find it.

B.) digging through the list archive (I simply don't have the time for that
sort of endeavor).
No one else does; you're no busier than anyone else (and likely less busy
than some dynamos around here). People will answer questions happily, up to
a point. Not getting off your ass to do some simple research and wasting
others' time is *not* going to make you popular, even if you're otherwise a
welcome member of the community.
Make the time. End of story.
