I've just been monitoring this debate and my perspective is really the
Qube3, but what I do for a Qube3 I do have working on a RaQ4.
I have been able to do a full diaster recovery without any pain.
As a test I even turned my Qube3 into a RaQ4 by simply doing a full restore
of the RaQ4 backup onto the Qube3.
What product am I talking about?
Its like Legato in that there is a client agent on the RaQ and a backup
server elsewhere, but MUCH more cost effective. It is Retrospect Backup by
Dantz <http://www.dantz.com/> or <http://www.betterbackup.com/>.
The bad news is that the Linux client is still beta.
I've been using it for months and its great. I've been using the MacOS and
Windows versions for years and they are simply the best.
If you want to know more talk to these guys ...
Eric Ullman <eric_ullman@xxxxxxxxx>
Craig Isaacs <craig_isaacs@xxxxxxxxx>
There is also a guy at Cobalt/Sun who is/was responsible for backups.
Byron Servies <bservies@xxxxxxx>
I've exchanged email with Byron (as I'm working on a Qube3 "package" for the
Retrospect Linux Client) and he has been really helpful. He has written a
Technical Paper "Disaster Recovery on the RaQ 4 with Third-Party Software"
which may be of interest to some.
Cheers, Malcolm
