I have been reading through other Linux newsgroups on the preferred way to
close certain ports. I have tried to follow the methodology but seem to be
having varying levels of success.
Firstly, I ran necrosoft scan which gave me a list of the currently open
ports. I then logged in as root and edited the /etc/inetd.conf file and
hashed out the services that I no longer needed. This included imap on port
143. I then ran /etc/rc.d/init.d/inet reload which in theory should have
closed imap.
This is where I am stuck. When I rescan the server, I still get an open
port on 143 called imap as well as a open ports on:
systat 11
unassigned 15 (netstat?)
finger on port 79
111 (sunrpc)
119 (nntp)
143 (imap)
540 (uupc)
635 Rlz dbase
1080 (socks?)
1524 (ingreslock)
As I run a bare bones server with email, httpd, ftp, ssh, and mysql which
of the above can be closed without problems? What is the preferred way to
close these ports?
On a related subject.... once the imap port has been closed how do you
(Raq2)stop the server from sending admin messages saying that imap is
closed, and is it possible to disable red flash on active monitor?
Thanks
Ja
