It all depends on what the software license says. If it specifically
prohibits the use of the software on non-Cobalt systems or even a second
system, then it would be a violation to load it on another system,
regardless of the reason. If you think you can debug the software, contact
Cobalt and make arrangements. "Making copies of copyrighted materials is one
of the exclusive rights of the copyright owner." IIRC, the same applies to
those who load the RaQ4 software on a RaQ3. It's a violation of the
copyright.
