Re: [cobalt-users] Macintosh, AppleShare IP Users

 >
I get the impression that the Macs fail to receive, or lose, their DHCP
leases, then I think they self-assign themselves an "Apple" IP in order to
be able to share folders that they are set up to share.
---They will get the 169.254.xxx.xxx IP when file sharing is enabled and
there is no DHCP server. I have ran into this problem many, many times.

Actually, they'll assign themselves a 169.254.x.x address whether file sharing is on or not.

 > over TCP/IP," and the same for Program Linking. This check box is not
present in the OS 8 control panel. I have these check boxes turned off for
the OS 9 machines, but perhaps I should turn them on?
---Don't check the program linking box, but check the 'enable file sharing
clients to connect over TCP/IP' box.

That's assuming that they want each individual machine acting as a little file server.. better to just leave file sharing off if you have an Appleshare IP server

 > I believe that when we go to Appleshare 6.3.3, we will get new client
software for all the machines--I am just guessing from the literature.
---We have an Appleshare IP 6.3.3 server also. I had problems with it at
first crashing all the time, but we worked that out. Appleshare IP comes
with a copy of OS9, but I don't know about any client software other than
Apple network assistant. Have you checked out OS X yet? It's very, very
cool.

What did he mean by "client software?" Appleshare IP 6.3.3 comes with a copy of Network Assistant 4, I believe.. not sure if it's bundled with the machines. All ANA is for is remote administration, and quite often Timbuktu is a better choice.
