there is no DHCP server. I have ran into this problem many, many times.

---Don't check the program linking box, but check the 'enable file sharing
clients to connect over TCP/IP' box.

---We have an Appleshare IP 6.3.3 server also. I had problems with it at
first crashing all the time, but we worked that out. Appleshare IP comes
with a copy of OS9, but I don't know about any client software other than
Apple network assistant. Have you checked out OS X yet? It's very, very
cool.
