The way that I deal with this is setting up canonical domains using my main domain. For example I have a new site called newsite.com. I create the virtual site just like normal but add an alias called newsite.mydomain.com. I then go into my dns and add a canonical domain newsite.mydomain.com that points to my primary IP. I give the new client the temporary domain address that they can use to publish to their site until their domain name is transferred. (Since your main domain is already using your DNS server it is almost instant when you add a canonical domain). This has worked well for me and I have seen several other hosting providers use the same method.
