I have found the O'reilly series to be about the best for me. Whenever the
amazon box shows up, the kids want to know what animal I've got inside (if
you're not familiar with them, they each have a critter on them). See
http://linux.oreilly.com/ for linux-specific manuals, and there are links to
Unix, etc. books as well. Many offer sample chapters online. Usually
cheaper to source somewhere other than direct.
My $.02...no personal interest in O'reilly, amazon, or other entities
mentioned...
