Cobalt has always been good about replacing fans. That may have
something to do with the quality of fans they use. :-)
Everyone should visually check their fans at least once a month. I just
went and checked our RaQs (just over 100), and found another RaQ1 with a
dead fan. Last week I had a RaQ3 with both fans making a loud racket.
In the last 3-4 months (since we really started paying close attention),
we've had to replace the fans in about half of our RaQs. Our
environment is not dirty or anything either - we've got other servers
and network equipment that don't need new fans regularly.
If you are careful AND USE A ANTI-STATIC WRISTSTRAP, you can replace the
fans while the RaQs are running. The RaQ3/4 are a little more tricky;
they have two fans, and one is behind the power supply (takes a Torx bit
to get the PS loose, and it doesn't have a cover on the bottom).
