Well, not entirely correct. It is to avoid _patent_ problems, and it is
UniSys and IBM that owns the patent. It is not on the GIF format itself, but
rather on the LZW compression algorithm used in the GIF format. As far as I
recall, the patent will run out in a few years...
The trouble he's seeing with webalizer is exactly why, I choose to use
static linked webalizer in our PKG files. It is much easier to handle.
Especially on the RaQ4, where you can break the Cobalt PHP version by
upgrading the GD library yourself.
