Re: [cobalt-users] How upgrading to apache-1.3.14 on Cobalt Raq3?

I'd just like to offer my $0.02 here.
I don't know much about Linux and Apache. I didn't know much about IBM's MVS in 1980 either. Now at least, I can do a few things with MVS, but I can't tell you the number of times I broke a perfectly good system to either put maintenance on or move to a new version. And when the initial production IPL took place I still held my breath. Hell, even today I still hold my breath. There are plenty of people on the IBM Main Listserv (for MVS Sysprogs) who have never loaded a new coffee maker much less a major operating system. But we help them anyway, and never discourage them. Oh we tell 'em you better be able to restore the system to where you began (isn't that what the magic Cobalt restore disk is for?, although you might lose a lot more other stuff). Everyone learns differently, but doing is still the best way to learn anything. Gurus' do not become gurus by not doing something because its hard or complex. If I had listened to the moron back in 1980 who thought I was too stupid to become an MVS system programmer, I would be sweeping floors by now, or fixing copiers and printers. And sometimes its hard to keep people from their folly. If you want to do it, then here is the way to do it, but be prepared to lose everything on the server. In the mainframe world, we tell them to do it on a test system first (hope this guy has a test Qube.) That's pretty much SOP for every shop. But we all, even those of us with less experience or none, finally upgrade or put maintenance on the system. And we learn. So, I think this guy should absolutely recompile his kernel, and go for it. I also recommend he not be allowed near any critical or production server to do it. Get a test system and do it there. How's THAT for a compromise????:-)

You're kidding right..? You don't know how to setup SSL services on >>your RaQ3 and yet you're talking about wanting to recompile and upgrade the Apache kernel on the system...

Believe me! I'm not trying to "humor" (or insult) him; I'm a realist - just as I was when I helped point you to the mySQL packages you installed on your box. How closely do you follow this <or the developer?s> list..? If he even *thinks* he'll be able to recompile his RaQ3 successfully, the best to him!! I've followed and participated <and observed> this board <and developers list> for over a year now, and to my knowledge, even the slickest of Cobalt guru?s haven't succeeded in recompiling their RaQ3 <at least not without MAJOR headaches again to my knowledge> - It?ll break everything on the box!! And for god's sake, he's asking how to setup SSL - it's a button and a text field in the siteadmin GUI -- please!! Trust me - don't try and recompile your RaQ3, you'll find yourself on the floor in tears..!! Let?s not lead people that need or request our help down a path of destruction under false pretenses?

Now? The poster just stated he needed to upgrade <recompile> Apache to the latest version, but he didn?t state for what reason. I?m betting it might be so he can run PHP4 <maybe not>, as it requires Apache to be compiled with 1.3.12+ <Cobalt?s come installed with 1.3.6>. -BUT? HE DOESN?T NEED TO RECOILE APACHE to get PHP4 to work.. The list has good instructions on how to install PHP4 if one searches the archives.. <again if that?s what he wanted the recompile for>.

Good Luck to ya!
