Predating Red Hat by almost two years, Debian GNU/Linux not only
features all the aspects of a mature, well crafted operating system, but a
development effort unparalleled by any other version of Linux. With over 500
developers actively improving the code, Debian is the most comprehensive,
most dynamic version of Linux, period.
I would suggest you enjoy your cobalt for what it is ("Joes Kool System").
If you change the os then you will most likely loose some of the features
you like. (keypad, display, watchdog, A working kernel, etc.) Making
modules for it would be real interesting to say the least. Cobalt is great
for what it is. Don't try to make it into something it's not.
If you want a debian system I reccomend http://www.stormix.com/
