For localhost to work you MUST be accessing the database from the telnet
console of your server. Adding the domain allows for remote administration
using MySQL front end tools etc.
you don't need the single quotes no.

I'm trying to setup mySQL with phpMyAdmin as well <first db>.. When you
create the database with the above statement, do you include the single
quotes around the 'username'@'domain.com' and 'password', or do you drop
them?
Also, what's the difference between using the actual domain name vs. using
"localhost" if the domain is on the same machine?
