AOL has told us, and I have verified several times (including within the
last few days when I posted the headers on this very list) that all
outgoing port 25 traffic on aol is diverted to their own servers.

No I cannot explain this. Can you direct me to the specific posts, so I
can look at the headers?

According to aol, if you indicate any mail server, it will still go out,
just through their proxy server. So I agree, there's no reason for you
to pay anything extra.

Since the issue is what aol does, and now what you do, no specific model
of server you use could make a difference.
