I'm sure the attorney general has a *very* good grasp of how email
works... hell, 95% of people seem unaware that the "From:" field
is completely meaningless!
Fact: there is *no* reason to leave your server as an *open* relay.
Fact: there's still not much reason to relay even from defined IPs / ISPs.
Fact: spammers *will* find and abuse an open relay.
Fact: when they do, it's you, your users and your customers that will
suffer.
Bad analogy time - say you lived in a town and there's a bunch of bad guys
who like to burgle houses. Trouble is, they need a getaway car to be
successful.
For some reason nobody will sell them a car. However, every time they
manage
to steal a car, they break into a load of houses.
Now, if my neighbour said to me, "hey, why can't I leave my car unlocked
with the keys in the ignition, *I* don't use it as a getaway car" I would
suspect that they didn't understand the problem....
A happy Christmas / non-religion-specific-holiday-season to you all,
especially those I've managed to offend over the past year.
Back in January.
