Hi list.
We are looking for a new location to host our raq servers. Our business is
located in Atlanta, Ga and naturally we would like to stay as close as
possible to home.
Our servers are not big on bandwidth usage, however, we will require about
32 ip addresses.
If you have any suggestions or solid recommendations on raq friendly
colocation sites send them to me directly frank@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
We are not opposed to leaving the state, as long as we can have quick
access to the building. Also, I hear that MCI/Worldcom has some new
facilities if anyone wants to speak to those.
Thanks in advance.

I am evaluating a number of databases, MySQL, PostgreSQL 7.0x and
Interbase 6.0 for a new project. I am really looking for transactions so
the MySQL is a real outsider at the moment.
Does anyone have any experience using these databases on a Raq 3 or 4?
Which is faster, easier to develop for (using php) and most stable. If
anyone knows of any comparative articles they would also come in handy.
Regards,
Scott.

Right.

Right.

Oops, wrong. A single computer can answer to several different
names and there's nothing wrong with that. Heck, my little Sun
at home answers to ns2, www, ftp, smtp, pop, imap, secure, gw,
and sun.
A single computer can also run multiple *services* and there's
nothing wrong with that. You simply know that if the computer
goes down, they all go down. But your ISP is taking a simple
approach: you could also have told your RaQ to answer to both
ns1 *and* www on the same IP, and no one would care. The good
thing about using different names is, it's very easy to migrate
later if your load gets heavier. I always use smtp.* and pop.*
hostnames in my client configurations, even though they always
point to the same machine. But if ever I should want to make
them separate, this way takes 10 seconds of work (point smtp.*
to a new IP address) while if they all use mail.* for in and
out then I'm stuck keeping SMTP and POP traffic on a single
server.
> Is sharing a base IP address between a DNS and website good
> or bad practice?? It seems to work but are there potential
> problems that we were not made aware of?
It's totally irrelevant. DNS service and web service simply
have nothing to do with each other. The only thing is, you do
need to have two DNS servers on two different IP's (ideally
on two different networks) so that one of them is always up
even if your entire company goes south temporarily. Primary
and secondary DNS *should not* be on a single machine.
You can do it, but it's not a good idea. If your single
computer with www and ns1 goes down, the other computer with
ns2 (maybe at your ISP's location) will tell the world you're
unavailable. But if ns1 and ns2 both die, the clients will be
told the domain or host does not exist. In the eye of the
sysadmin, it's the same thing: they didn't get a webpage.
But in the eyes of the customer... they're very different.

Judging from Jeff's previous answer, Mike, let me also add:
"If there is, what is it and could you please give me instructions?"

Try http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq3.eng.html . For our purposes,
patches and updates are synonymous.

I think patches are - at least in this case - the same as updates.

Has anyone used the migration utility for moving info from a Raq3 to a Raq3?
What are some errors that you have run into?

Subject: [cobalt-users] Problem with zone transfer from Qube3...
Can anyone who has zone transfers working on their Qube3 give me some
advice?
I am running the Qube3 rather stock at the moment. I have the DNS server
working and answering nslookup queries correctly for my domain, aratar.com,
on the Qube3. My ISP is delegating reverses to me. Right now, NIC records
point to a machine in another domain, bosphorus.dimebank.com, that hosts my
Master DNS record. I am ready to convert bosphorus to a secondary but have
run into a problem.
When we attempt the zone transfer , we get the error message "Query
Refused". On the admin GUI, I have tried leaving Administration>Network
Services>DNS/Advanced Zone Transfer Access blank (which according to both
Cobalt and Bind documentation, should allow access to anyone), and I have
tried putting in the specific computer or just its domain. Nothing works.
In my logs, I see an error
messages:Dec 11 14:57:56 ulmo named[666]: unapproved AXFR from
[204.152.188.145]
.2039 for "aratar.com" (not authoritative)
Here is what we get on the other system:
> nslookup
> > Default Server: bosphorus.dimebank.com
> > Address: 204.152.188.145
> > Aliases: 145.188.152.204.in-addr.arpa

I get the same error message when I try the nslookup and domain ls on ulmo.
I am baffled. Do I need to turn on domain transfers somewhere that I havent
noticed? Can anyone suggest what I should investigate to solve this?

It could. Try chowning it to whatever admin owns the rest of the site. Or,
if the script is trying to run as Nobody, would adding Nobody to the site's
Group help? You could try that too.
Doesn't hurt to try stuff, and it just might work. :)
