Try giving Cobalt a break! (Who said that?)
Cobalt has done a very good job of bringing you a 1U box that allows the
beginner the ability to setup shop without all the demands of the linux
community. You are welcome to go over to VA Linux and buy a similar
hardware based box to 3-4? processors and the storage equipment... OMG if I
only had a million dollars! But I don't and most people don't want to pay a
little more and get a box that requires full attention to the linux
community. There every upgrade is up to you and Every security problem is
yours to figure out. If you have this experience level and time to spend in
the bind, apache, ssl of your choice, ftp of your choice, sendmail, backup
software, qpopper, imapd, perl, and, so on mail/news list then do it. You
will then learn what cobalt has to do on several platforms. Some of which
do seem to get more attention then others.
Cobalt support has gotten better. They answer more calls and are now
participating more in the list areas (mainly top posters). They are
providing in many cases the proper fix for the default system but often the
changes disagree with changes that we as cutomers have made on our boxes and
then not reverted back to or backed up correctly. Qpopper didn't break pop
B4 relay, Pop b4 relay was something added to make some customers happy that
they could use pop mail. I have no use or want for pop mail.... Yuck!
Chmod in ftp didn't break it got dumped and for good reason. These are
additional issues related to the original problem. Ask yourself if you want
to spend more time with a hackable version of whatever until every program
associated with it is rewritten? even if you never use it?
Cobalt is doing more but they still have a documentation problem which I
don't agree with and thats the low amount of doc's without paying for
school. Yes I would like to see a new stable version of perl,
bind/gui/raq2/ttl (HINT!) this and that but I don't need an unstable version
just a secure one.
