Re: [cobalt-users] 777 directories for cgi-scripts [RaQ4]

Arsalan--
Thanks for the suggestion, but that's not the problem. :) I've been
installing cgi-scripts (perl) since 1995, and the first thing I do is
set to 755. In fact my ftp software is set to automatically upload files
as 755. However, I notice that the server seems to change them sometimes
upon delivery (i.e., not 755).

The problem is that the script which is 755, is not being able to WRITE
a text file (_filname.txt) to a directory which needs 777 permissions.
Basically, it can't increment the counter because it can't write the
file to track the number of hits. I've tried setting the files,
directories, and manually putting a file inside with various permissions
and it won't work. It won't let the script write to a 777 directory.

Which totally sucks! I am really frustrated... I've spent about five
hours on this since last night reading, trying things. Do I need to
deactivate cgi-wrap?

I'm at a loss... call me a newbie, whatever.... I shouldn't have to
telnet in to do simple things like this (my clients won't).

What am I missing, or what is it that I don't know about cgi scripts
having permission to write files to a world writable directory in the
virtual domain root, such as web/cgi-bin/data/textfile.txt .... why
can't it write to the data directory set to 777 (or anything else)
???????

TIA
Christopher

Try this.. make the script to write to files with .cgi extensions set to

755. This solved my problem in a raq 4
