IMHO, (slightly tained with more than 20 years of setting up and maintaining
Enterprise class IT networks) you want to compartmentalize software and its
functionality. The idea is to isolate potential problems to manageable
chunks that do not overlap wherever possible instead of putting all your
eggs in one basket so to speak. In this case, changes made or problems (for
whatever reason; h/w or software failures, human errors, etc), experienced
on a system providing critical functionality do not pollute other systems
providing another critical service (i.e. your customers http servers and
sites). If one can do this within their IT infrastructure, cause and effect
relationships within the organizations systems are readily apparent and
outages can be hopefully isolated to a small subset of your systems.
Additionally, your range of options for implementation of specific network
and applications services becomes more than a single vendor solution. You
can them opt for technologies and cost benefits best suited for your
organization. The philosophy of choice goes somewhat against the grain of
many IT organizations today, as many organizations have "single vendor"
policies for various reasons (training costs, fear of technology,
elimination of the anxiety of having to make intelligent decisions, past
experiences). As far as Cobalt appliances go, they aren't exactly
inexpensive, they are the fastest things around, and they aren't the most
flexible boxes around. if you think there is some value to what I said
above, you will want to delegate DNS to dedicated hardware so you can make
changes to DNS (software upgrades, customizations, etc) as you require.
(i.e., you may want to use a DNS software package that can use a relational
database as a data source to make automating zone/host/IP/record type
assignments programmatically easier and more stable). I think that
generally, you would want a more cost effective solution in this case.
