I am new to the world of server management. I am reasonbly intelligent and
have been programming for 25 of my 33 years. I have been a reseller for my
ISP for about 2 years hosting about 45 sites, 15 of my own.
After paying my last bill to my ISP I started looking for a way too keep
more of the money in my pocket and spent 2 months researching, reading and
learning all that I thought I could about moving to a server of my own.
I knew up front that my ISP's idea of support was 'see support.cobalt.com'
I downloaded the manual for the RaQ 2, read it cover to cover, went through
all of the knowledge base and archives and found answers to all of the
problems I could anticipate and how to handle the services my clients were
currently using. i.e. Real Server, mailing list. etc...
As noted in a previous post I spent 5 WHOLE DAYS (as much as 60 hours)
trying to figure out the most basic of functions, setting up a server as
ns1/ns2, which was answered by two resources and resolved in 10 minutes.
In my humble, newbie, inexperienced, idiot's guided (no trademark
infringement intended), opinion, what is needed is...
Someone at Cobalt who is committed to keeping the Knowledge Base current (40
hrs x $60 (true cost) = $2400 (margin @ 30% on 8 servers sold)) updated,
with a goal of not 'What you 'can' do but, specifically 'How to do it'
guide. (See previous noted thanks to Fathi and Interliant.)
As well as an up to date, Boolean, including 'special characters' searchable
archive list.
And in my 'net dreams' a form where a newbie could put in their servers NS
names and IP's and they would get a step-by-step guide as to 'how-to' set up
their servers. (i.e. many, many sales for Cobalt. Hint, hint)
Following this train of thought I have registered the domain
raqresources.com (subtitled 'things I wish I knew before I had a RaQ') where
I would like to post the 'best of the best'-'how to's' (subtitled, Duh, I am
an ISP, now what do I do?)
