Had the latter problem a few weeks ago. For about two weeks the
driver-side door wouldn't open, but one day it just started opening
again. But now the door seems a bit out of alignment when I go to close
it; time to visit a body shop for some adjustments, I suppose (>200,000
miles on it).

It's working, but how can any of us get to the same place? Somehow I
don't think your road was easy. Sounds dangerous to install it to me.
