Good question. But I wondered why my car didn't come with floor mats standard,
either. It's a silly world.

Honestly, after reading your last post about your email problems, DNS problems
and CGI problems I'd caution taking on a PHP installation that will require
modifying Apache config files. Installing PHP isn't the most complex
installation in the world of Linux, but it's more difficult and dangerous than
getting the three items mentioned above working correctly. I'm not trying to be
rude or insult your intelligence. I just don't sugar-coat things. We can't all
be expert system administrators and we don't all need to be. But if you not an
experienced system admin it's a good idea to consider letting a system admin
take on these larger tasks or work with you to teach you what you need to know.
A good system administrator with actual interpersonal skills could make all your
worries go away. It wouldn't be a bad idea to install Linux on a 486 you or
someone you know has in their attic and practice installing and configuring
software on it instead of your production box. With a single good Linux book
and access to tutorials on the web you can learn everything you need to know to
maintain and administer your server. Or you can work with someone like me to
take care of your needs. Feel free to contact me off-list if you'd like and we
can talk.

And if you really want to take on the PHP4 installation yourself consult the
documentation (file called INSTALL) within the PHP source distribution, this
list's archives (instructions have been posted several times in last month),
message boards at phpbuilder.com, mailing lists at php.net or some other
PHP-related source. Hope that helps.
