Not very forgiving of someone who's posted 600 or 700 times b/w Cobalt
developers and Cobalt users, are you? FYI, the reason I even responded to
that email was to note that Cobalt's mailing list *was not* behaving as it
had in the past. I was courteous enough to precede my message with the
phrase "OFF-TOPIC" so users would know up front it could be skipped over.
Yes, I chose to respond to another off-topic suggestion that was made, but I
really don't see the harm. And I doubt many others do either. IMHO, this
list could benefit from a little more humor and insight into the people
tapping on the keyboards. What it needs less of are the same questions over
and over, eager neophyte users who don't know an answer, but take a stab at
it anyway and users who don't have the courtesy to perform a cursory search
of the web archives, the server's man pages and a search engine like
google.com if necessary. If you're familiar with a pareto analysis you'd
understand that posting the occasional "stay on topic" message on-list isn't
going to solve the problem I imagine is irritating you about this list - the
volume of email on it (never mind the fact that by responding on-list you
generated an additional email). If you want to get at the root of the
problem, help me organize a collection of frequently asked questions along
with detailed, concise, accurate answers. Then work with me, anyone else
who wants to assist [and potentially Cobalt] to organize this information in
a way that is easy to navigate and search and help educate the user base so
that this list is more effective, more efficient and saves everyone involved
time. This is a challenge to anyone out there that likes to talk the talk,
that it's time to walk the walk. I'll make it happen if you'll help. If
not, I won't be hurt. I have more than enough on my plate.
