Thanks for your help. Here is what I found out:
Version 8 of the Single Server edition DOES let you connect to UNIX servers.
I had Version 8 build 3311 and it has a bug in it that prevents it from
seeing the UNIX servers. To fix it I had to download the 116MB Build 3315.

My understanding is that Veritas views UNIX and NT as servers, and
therefore the requirement for the multiserver license.
This might have changed between 7 and 8, I'm not sure. I wasn't aware that
8 was out, but I'm running 7.3 and this seems to be the case. Once I added
the multi-server license, I had no problem at all getting to my Linux
servers.
