Frank,
watch your /home/logs/httpd/accces & error logs like a hawk... unfortunately
.htaccess is a pitifully weak mechanism for stopping mass-password attempts...
when you see someone from a single IP trying hundreds of diferent passwords...
you've got a hacker... add them to your .htaccess file and maybe even your
hosts.deny file for good measure.
