[cobalt-users] FOUND ANSWER -- Front Page ... No .htaccess file error message

After tech support calls with both Cobalt and Microsoft ... I think I have found the answer to permission problems related to Front Page. When I (and others on this list have used the TOOLS --> SECURITY --> PERMISSIONS selection on this list we have gotten the error message can not open .htaccess file ... does not exist). So then we tried adding an .htaccess file and were told that access was being handled by an outside application.

As it turns out, setting permissions with Front Page is not allowed on the Cobalt servers because of the specific way the extensions are installed and instead you have to set all user/administrator permissions with the Cobalt interface. This according to third tier support people at MicroSoft. They actually said that the option of permissions should have been grayed out at the Front Page client side ... and in any case, they where not available. IF ANYONE knows this to infact not be the case I would love to hear from you.

Now, with this in mind, is it possible to set up sub Webs on a RAQ3? Has anyone been able to set up sub-Webs? If so, what sets did you need to take to be able to do that?

Chris

On June 15 I sent a message out to the list outlining an error message I was getting in Front Page ... but it does not seem to be a Front Page problem but instead some type of problem related to the way FP installs on RAQs. So far I have not seen any responses ... and at the risk of seeming impatient I was hoping I may be able to try again ...

HERE IS THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE
**********************************
I recently enabled Front Page on my first Cobalt site. It seemed to have work well ... and all of the functions I have tried to date appear to work properly. THEN ... I tried to change permissions by using the Front Page menu --->Tools --->Security ---> Permissions. Once at that point, I get an error message: Server Error Can not open: "/home/sites/site1/web/.htaccess": No such file or folder
***********************************

Since that time I have installed Front Page on other webs on my servers ... with the same results. Now when I say install, all I mean is that I clicked the enable FP check box on my site settings and then the 12345 (FP) icon showed up in the box (next to the secure email and ssl icons, etc.) Is there something else that I should be doing .. am I missing a step?

Thanks,

Christopher VanOosterhout
