Mike:
Check to make sure that the IP address AND domain of the SMTP server you want
your client to use for SMTP is listed in the Relay for the following
Hosts/Domains box on the Email Parameters page. If you've added a host alias
for the mail server (eg. mail.domain.com) that you want your user to send
through, then make sure it is listed in the Host/Domain Aliases box.
Now the yucky part. If you do not employ POP-before-SMTP, then you must also
ensure that their IP connection domain is listed in the relay box. For
example, if they have a dialup connection from ibm.net, then you have to add
ibm.net into the relay box. Doing so opens your email server up to everyone
else who happens to be connected via ibm.net, which is most likely a Bad Idea.
If you can narrow it down a bit to a particular subnet (eg.
dialup.dallas.ibm.net) then you narrow your exposure, but still...
POP-before-SMTP is definitely recommended if that client has a POP account on
your server, but this may not always be the case.
Dan:
No, I believe you are mistaken here. You do not need to add any relay entries
for domains that user send TO, only for domains that users send FROM. If you
add a relay entry for ibm.net, then a user connected via ibm.net can send to
ANY domain without having to list the receiving domains.
