Objet : [cobalt-users] Second Server - Host Name (Name Server)
For once, I'm thinking before acting.
I have one RaQ that is registered as a host " ns1.myserver.com " . The
Cobalt Name Server is set to ns1 and the domain name is set to myserver.com
under the Control Panel, Network area. So the main site under Site
Management shows hostname ns1.myserver.com
So now I want to put another server online (somewhere different than where I
have the first one located). Is it OK to register another HOST with
internic of ns2.myserver.com and install this new RaQ with this new
host name?
I just want to make sure that I don't mess up the sites that I have on the
first machine by putting up the host name for the second one.
***Unrelated question****
If I register a domain at one of the reduced cost registrars... will Network
Solutions still register a host (name server) for that domain - even though
it is registered from else where?
Thanks in advance
Dan
-------------------------------------------------------------
Dan,
I am no expert, but here is what I understand of the domain registrations.
If I am not exactly on the nose, please correct me. (it will confirm if I
understand exacly)
Registrars:
Internic would be the main DataBase of all the registrations.
Network Solutions and the other redistrars send their registrations to
Internic
So yes even if you register to a "reduce cost" registrar you are still
listed at Internic.
Registrations:
Lets break apart what most call a "domain name"
www.company.com
www = Host name
company = 2nd level domain name
com = 1st level domain name
When you register a "domain name" you register a 1st & 2nd level domain name
So you registered "company.com"
(pointing to whatever DNSs you specified)
The DNSs you specified should relate the "www.company.com",
"ns1.company.com", "ftp.company.com",
"xxx.company.com" to the IP address you gave them.
Therefore if you want a second DNS with your same "domain name" I beleive
you can just create it, give it an IP address and give it as the second DNS
of sites you host.
