This symptom is typical of hard drive problems, seen it on other machines,
if the drive is sick it will take it a long time to reset, by the time
it's done the machine has already given up trying to boot, but if you
reset the machine without cycling the power the machine boots because the
drive is now alive....WD's seem to do this especially from experience ;0

unfortunatly, bad ram can do stuff like this too....

run badblocks a few times? (not finding a bad block isn't conclusive, the
newer drives do a pretty good job of hiding errors :(

(installing lots of updates and patches might have been coincidental,
since it uses more ram , and put stiff in different places on the disk...)

10 cent opinion....since there's not enough info here, you need to isolate
things more...
