Telnet isn't the limiting factor; I was writing directly to the sendmail
on the receiving machine.  It's sendmail, that usually doesn't work
interactively, and therefore doesn't understand the backspace.  I'm
sorry I wasn't more clear.

I wrote my post in Netscape, which inserted the space before the "."
itself to prevent the premature end of the post.
