Check the mail for Root, and take a look at your maillogs in /var/logs.

I would suggest purchasing Running Linux published by O'Reily and
Associates.  I don't think its really the best beginner book, but it is
widely regarded to be one of the best books for administering linux.

http://www.amazon.com has tons of Linux books, and each have a lot of
ratings and reviews available on the site.  So its pretty easy to pick a
good book.
