RE: [cobalt-users] Using a RaQ 2/3 as NS1/NS2 servers

I notice Paul already replied, but though I'd add some more.

Using a RaQ2/3 for DNS alone is a pretty expensive nameserving solution.
Your best bet is to find an old 486, 32Mb RAM and a >1gb harddisk and a copy
of RedHat 6.2 (http://www.cheapbytes.com - $1.50 approx) and you're all set!

No I'm not exageratting. 486 will run DNS just fine. Upto a thousand sites
or so atleast. At the worst you might have to stick in a bit more RAM
(unlikely!) Welcome to the world of Linux :-)

I'm guessing you WANT to use the GUI of the RaQ, but it's a lot more
configurable (and FASTER once you have more than about 20 domains!) to just
get a "Bind" book (Jeff - This is your queue to point out that O'Reilly
book!) and take a quick look. It's pretty simplistic to do the normal stuff
which I'd imagine is what you want.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Using a RaQ 2/3 as NS1/NS2 servers

I am doing some research for my company. We are considering using the RaQ 2
or 3 as our Primary and Secondary Name servers. Along with our Customer's
DNS servers. But I have a few questions that I can't seem to find on the
website. I hope someone out there can help me.

*Note they will only be doing DNS, no web or mail.

1. Can either of these machines be used as a NS server?
2. Which model is recommended and why?
3. How many DNS requests can one handle with out getting lagged?
4. Average machine takes up how much of the internal harddrive?

Model I am looking at is the Base RaQ2 machine 16mb of Ram.

Any comments? Open for suggestions.
