Webring = complications. Most of them are moderately successful
as viewers have no idea what they are and how to use them. The 'frontpage'
you describe is the site I'm talking about putting together somewhere, that
way not only all the sites in the webring would be included in the listings
but there's some descriptions as to what's hosted on a particular site. I
find just clicking the webring buttons on the bottom tends to be confusing
at best.
Why? You hit the nail with 'responsibility'. If a part of the ring
is or goes DOA, the ring is broken and you've lost the viewer. If there's
any technical problem with the connection between the viewer and the next
segment of the ring - problem. And placement of the webring icons, etc.
usually isn't standardized, again problems. And if you get more than 5-10
sites in the ring, it may take you quite awhile to jump around until you
find the right one for your solution/info.
I'm not against the webring, I think that's part of the overall
content needed on the main site with descriptors as to each site's specialty
and content. Let the user click the link, once inside if they want to use
the ring to 'take the tour', more power to them.
Just my $.02 on this...
