hm, after looking into it i think the raq uses a daily cron for updating the
time, although i don't entirely get what's happening there
(/etc/cron.daily/ntpdate.auto).

Generally yes, but I have seen times when it did not start. Plus the GUI
only allows for one (1) time server - and I have four in-house which I use
for all my "other" servers. These four sync to national level (stratum 1 or
stratum
2) servers, then all my in-house and customer servers sync to them.
Generally you can run "chkconfig --list" from a root prompt and see what is
listed for xntpd. Should be 345 "on" if set to run, then a ps fax | grep
ntp should show the process. "xntpdc -p" will show what servers are sync'd
and their status.
