Tom,
Check to see if your server (http) is allowing and/or has the
"Followsymlinks" set in your configuration. Believe the default for
/home/sites/*/ (all site directorys) is:
"Options -FollowSymLinks +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch"
which probably needs to be commented out (put a # in front) for your symlinks
to work to user directories and then httpd restarted...
