Additional information: I started over with a stock 550, updated MySQL and
installed OpenWebmail, and imported my CMU archive using cmuImport -d. Ran
dnsImport off the records file I copied from the XTR to the 550. Went to
the GUI and changed all IP addresses in DNS Basic Services to the LAN IP.
Went to each vsite and changed the IP address for the vsite. Made a few
tweaks to access.conf. Vsites now resolve. Problem solved.
I was able to track down that the original import to the first 550 resulted
in a couple of vsites that had different numbers than on the XTR (the source
machine). It was these sites that were not rendering properly. I don't
know if there is a way to fix the site number issue on the 550 with the bad
site numbers. If anybody else knows, please describe how! Otherwise, I'll
do an OS restore and start over on that unit.

Thanks, but no joy. The other vsites work. Three do not.

<snip>
This has worked well except for three vsites. When I test them in my
browser, I get a download popup (Open, Save, Cancel, yadda yadda). The file
name is index.html and the vsite URL is correct. But the index.html page
doesn't automatically open in my browser. If I select Open it looks fine.

This might be not the correct answer for you but I had the same problem a
year ago when I was surfing on the net.
What I had to do to stop the downloads of the index files was the following:
In the advanced settings of IE, I checked the User HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connection and the problem was solved.
Again, it's a wild guess but it solved my problem.
