Mat, to change the "mark as read time", it's Tools/Options, and click on the
Read tab.  I use OE for my imap mail client and have had no troubles.  The
only real problem is that I have found the imap server is not very
scalable -- it gets very slow as the size of my mailbox grows.

I have found that Outlook Express has an long delay before the message is
offically marked read (I think it is something like 10 seconds).  I have
seem simular problems, but if I open the mail and let wait, it will be
marked as unread and stay that way.

I normally do use Outlook Express, but there must be a option to change
that, nested some where 5 menus deep off some toolbar.
