Re: [cobalt-users] RAQ 2 FTP permission denied and new sites.

At 05:57 AM 3/12/00 +0000, you wrote:

I have run in to the problem of not being able to FTP (as admin) to my client sites.

I have read the posts on this subject (as many as I can find) but no resolutions seems to exist other than to FTP as the site admin.

You must have come up against the linux limitation of 32 groups maximum per user. That's a linux limitation, and I don't expect Cobalt to change linux to that extent.

This is a pain in the butt, but I am willing to put up with this.

However, it's usually much easier to ftp into a site as the siteadmin anyway; I don't see why you'd consider this a problem.

My problem is, how can I do this before the DNS has propogated ?

The same as you do before DNS has propogated. FTP doesn't care which FTP number you log in as; it simply needs to find the box, and it can find it by any IP# you care to use that is resolved by your box.

I cannot find any resolution to the posts placed by others about what address to use as a host address in the FTP client.

Had I noticed such posts, I would have answered them <blush>; it's pretty easy...

In other words, if my IP address is 123.123.123.123 and my domain is "www.hosting-service.co.uk" and my client domain is "www.clientsite.co.uk", how do I upload files to his site prior to the DNS becoming active ?

You set up a siteadmin for www.clientsite.co.uk. You FTP in. You negotiate the directory tree to the /home/sites/siteX/web directory for that site. Since the default login for a siteadmin is /home/sites/siteX/users/username, you can usually just change directories to "../../web" and you'll be where you need to be. DO NOT FALL PREY to the common mistake of just changing directories to "web"; that's the users personal website; files put there will not show up at www.clientsite.co.uk.

Then FTP the files in as you would normally.
