[cobalt-users] Front page can't find .htaccess

Sorry guys - got a newbie in the list. Just got the RaQ2 - thought it would give me the speed and features of Linux without my having to know Linux. *sigh*

Here's my problem. I've put all the patches in; the RaQ now has FrontPage2000 Server Extentions installed, and they appear to be working - using Frontpage 98 I can query the server and pull in the root web, etc. But when I try to set permissions using "Tools:Permissions", I get an error saying

Server Error: Cannot open "/home/sites/sitex/web/.htaccess": no such file or folder.

This happens on all sites and all webs for all users, admin or not. I did delete all sites and all users and recreated them after installing the Server Extentions update packages, to no avail. I tried telnetting in and installing a generic .htaccess file - this resulted in an error that said an outside person was handling permissions manually, no editing would be allow (or words to that effect.)

Anyone got any ideas? I'm I just missing something blindingly obvious?

TIA

Scott
