I find that often ignorance is bliss. You see I don't tell my users that I am using an "alias" for them. I simply tell them that their e-mail address is joe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and their user name for pop3 is td-joe
What do you do if their user name is already eight characters? Just use the first five characters? I suppoe that work if no one else at their company has the same first five characters, but that could be a problem in companies that use lastname-first initial as their user names.
