On the RaQ3, it doesn't work. If you put "@domain.com", the mail
bounces. If you put "@host.domain.com", that account seems to get _all_
mail for that domain.
The RaQ3 is pretty standard Red Hat Linux. And runs sendmail. Which
certainly knows how to use virtusertable.
So any problem in a RaQ3 is most likely in how their interface writes the
virtusertable.
Also, it appears that on a RaQ2, if you have a catch-all for domain1.com
and a user blah in anouther domain on the RaQ2 (domain2.com) on the same
RaQ2, then mail to blah@xxxxxxxxxxx goes to the blah@xxxxxxxxxxx user
instead of the catch-all for domain1.com. So, you should not rely on a
catch-all to get extra email addresses (like "info" or "webmaster"); you
should set those up explicitly.
I've never tried this on any RaQ, but again, it's standard Linux. On my
Intel Linux boxes I have a user named "Jeff" that gets its mail on the RaQ
(never gets read on any of my desktop systems). Yet
<jeff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> set up with virtusertable, gets into the right
mailbox and ends up on my desktop system.
So again, this might be a problem with the gui interface.
However, that said, I don't like to set up real names as users on any linux
box; I like to set up "coded" names. IE: c1000304 is the 304th mailbox
set up on box c1. True, people have to set up their email client that way,
but it's a one-time job, and no one's left me for it yet.
The good news is that people who want
verylongnameovereightcharacters@xxxxxxxxxx have exactly the same set up
8chrname@xxxxxxxxxxx
Jeff
