I would be surprised to learn that anyone from our support department
reads this list- Cobalt is a corporation, and like any other corporation it
is expected to make money. The investors demand it, the shareholders demand
it, and therefore the executive staff and management demands it from us.
instead we must wait while an OS update is prepared and bugs are fixed, and
then wait again while it passes SQA--which hasn't been very effective lately.

As a new Cobalt owner, I continue to be amazed! The response from Duncan
i.e. is typical of a company that has lost site of it's primary focus. I
--snip--

I am curious why my original post was not forwarded in its entirety? rfc1855
goes into more detail, but its basically just bad netiquette; especially when
it has potential to reflect negatively upon myself. If you must send my rants
to someone, not that I'm complaining, please at least provide them with a
little context.. I myself was confused at first until it sunk in that this
came from me-- mostly because I rarely let myself slip into that mindset and
even more rarely produce emails with that tone...

But as a lowly engineer I have no real power here; not to speak for Cobalt,
nor to dictate our goals. My contributions and opinions are mine alone,
and my rant was more the result of weakened self restraint and general
frustration (and lack of sleep) than anything indicitive of Cobalt's primary
focus. Of course I'm going to get emotional when I or my friends are
subject to public attack or threat-- I've done it before and I will do it
again-- though obviously this was not the best forumn, and I will not make
the mistake on our public list again. But that does NOT mean that Cobalt
has lost direction; just that certain members of its engineering staff are
overworked and underslept...

As for the particular subject of my post.. Well things got a little off
track.. Charlie, you are right: I don't have any right to take the offensive
against you for a situation that I was not involved in. I am sorry. I
failed to take my own advice and have a few drinks before even considering
a response, and I let my personal feelings get in the way of my professional
work ethic. I saw only how Jeff reacted and felt only my own reaction. And
then proceeded turn what started out as a quick response into a completely
unnecessary ranting and raving email that lost all direction and ended up only
venting my frustrations onto an undeserving group of people-- none of whom
give a damn about the stress level of cobalt engineers. Its especially a
problem when those people are our very own customers. loyal or not, we
wouldn't
be here today if it weren't for your (at least initial) interest and support.
It was definately one of those messages I read the next morning and wondered
what was going through my mind when I actually hit the send button...

Let me say that I have no intention of discontinuing my support to this list,
and I hope that my angry tone doesn't frighten any of you away from posting...
I have made my feelings known to upper levels that we need to clarify our
"official" position on these lists. I am an idiot--our own web site says
_nothing_ about these lists being supported or unsupported, leaving the average
new subscriber to notice posts from _____@xxxxxxxxxx and naturally conclude
that we are providing an official channel of support. Well, until our own
site says differently I shall be careful to note that what I have to say
should be taken lightly and my opinions should definately not be considered
"one" with cobalt. (I actually tend to disagree more... ;)

Charlie; I will talk with Jeff about your backup/restore problems and see if
we can't come up with a solution. However I know that he has alot going on
this
weekend so it may not happen until next week...

Thank you for listening,
-duncan
