What backup software are you using to backup SMB?

Are you using the Qube software to write the backup to a remote SMB share
(i.e. push) or are you using software on a remote Windows platform to backup
the SMB shares on the Qube (i.e. pull)?

I have used the Qube software to backup to a remote SMB share ... it works,
but I wouldn't want to depend on it. I wanted a cycle which included both
full and incremental backup ... the GUI couldn't do it, I had to add
additional cron scripts myself. The purpose of a backup is to be able to
RESTORE ... I did't feel confident about the "supplied" builtin process.

I have tried ARCserver ... it refused to backup SAMBA shares on the Qube,
although it would happily deal with "standard" SMB shares on other
workstations in the network.

I have tried Backup Exec ... it also refused to backup SAMBA shares on the
Qube, although it would happily deal with "standard" SMB shares on other
workstations in the network.

Legato is too expensive.

Arkeia ... appeared to be far to complicated to bother trialing.

I'm using Retrospect for Windows 5.0 from Dantz <http://www.dantz.com/> ...
it works! Originally a Mac based product which supported Windows clients
... now they have a version which runs on Windows. You can download a fully
functional demo from their web site.

The only thing Retrospect is missing is a Linux Client ... then I could
"protect" the whole Qube, not just the SAMBA/Netatalk shares.

Cobalt should talk to the developers at Dantz to see if a client can be
developed for the Qube to replace the Legato Client. IMHO very few Qube
customers are likely to have Legato.

Cheers, Malcolm
