Except if all the sites are on the same server as the DNS, it's moot. If the
DNS goes down, the server went down so it won't matter. Ideally, your DNS is
handled elsewhere, but not everyone does that.

You're being shortsighted, Dan.

Let's say all your sites, and your DNS are on the same server.

Let's say your server goes down.

Let's say I'm following a link, because I just read that you've got the best fubars in town, and I desperately need some.

Would you rather I get an error that says I can't connect, or that says there's no such domain?

Let's say I've just sent you an email to let you know your grandmother died and left you a quarter-million dollar Ferrari in her will.

Would you rather my mail-server tries to deliver the email for the next four days (notifying me after four hours that it still can't reach you), or would you rather I get it back saying there's no such domain?

Let's say your long-lost friend from Jr. High School (you remember the one) just got out of prison and he's trying to reach you to bum $1000 off you so he doesn't have to knock off another liquor store... well, forget this analogy; in this case you'd probably rather he think there's no such domain <smile>.

Get the idea <smile, again>?

Jeff
