Some constructive suggestions:
Point 1:
Perhaps it might be a good idea if Cobalt created a separate
one-way outgoing mail list that is used exclusively
for upgrade and security alert messages. It would only
be used for these type of 'official' and urgent technical notices.
I've been on the list since RaQ1 and even I sometimes loose
track of 'Cobalt' notices sent to the list. They tend to get
lost in the traffic. If I was a new user and list subscriber
I may not recognize Jeff's or Lyle's or Will's names as being
Cobalt employees and may not pay attention to their emails.
Monitoring the Cobalt web site for updates is also not particularly
easy. It seems that the security update info here:
http://www.cobalt.com/support/security/index.html
crosses and conflicts with other info and updates posted here:
http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq2.eng.html
and here:
http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq3.eng.html
It's hard to tell what is needed and where. What does my brand new
Raq3i just shipped last week need? It's not completely clear to me.
Point 2:
Selling a OS restore CD as separate product is a bad idea from a
PR POV. I'd rather have the $99 built into the price of the product
to have the piece of mind that if the OS, through my fault or not,
got totally hosed that I would have the means of restoring the machine
to factory condition without waiting for a CD to arrive that I have to
order. In the eyes of a lot of new Cobalt consumers, even though the Cobalt
products are called
"appliances" they really are just computers similar to the PC's on
our desktops. HP, Compaq, etc all include an OS or a restore CD of the
machines software with the price of the system. Why should it be different
for
Cobalt products? Is it an GNU issue?
Point 3:
Product Warranties are extremely complex legal instruments subject to dozens
of Federal and State laws and every consumer should read Product Warranties
very very carefully. Likewise, technicians and those without legal training
should not
toss the term "voided the warranty" around lightly. If one sticks to doing
upgrades via the GUI and .pkg files it seems
you are safe from warranty exclusions. However if you can't wait for the
.pkg release and fire up your telnet window to
install a rpm version, and break something, following the letter of the law
in the warranty language you might be voiding the warranty.
Be careful and don't run with scissors.

Well, i updated ProFTP from the cobalt tech that sent
the email to the mailing list telling us of the latest
ProFTP, well i been getting the errors (bottom of
email) and i emailed their support. They said "It
looks like you broke something" "Only update your
server using updates/packages from Cobalt"
1. this was from cobalt
2. this was a update from cobalt
Now he says my warrenty is void because its "broke"
now tell me that if i went to court (which of course i
am not) and brought this to the judge, it would be
clear that
1. this update was from a cobalt tech
2. it would not void my warrenty

If you would like us to attempt to get your RaQ2
back in running order, there
will be a fee of $200/hr. If this is a new RaQ2 and
you don't have any data on
it, you may opt to purchase an OS Restore CD ($99)
which will reformat and
repartition your hard drive before restoring the OS.

And now they want $200 a hour to fix my "broken"
server. I told him to forget it and i would wait for
the package that is "suppose to be released in 2
weeks"
