Re: [cobalt-users] Modem Recommendations for a new user...

Wonderful rant, Scott <smile>. I'll face these same issues if I ever decide to retire to the "real" rural America. I'm in the desert, but it's the southern California desert, so I get my choice of good connectivity.

Have you checked to make sure they still can't offer you ISDN; it'd be expensive, but it'd work. And if they've upgraded to allow DSL, they've probably upgraded to allow ISDN.

Another possibility, have you called (I know, finding the right department to call is a subject for a whole thread, too) and asked if you can pay more and run a server on the DSL line? That might be worth a shot.

All things considered, have you asked on the Internet Access list? True, it's for ISPs, but a discrete inquiry there could find you someone somewhere near Nowhere who'd be willing to share <smile>.

Hi,

Bell Atlantic has just this month determined that we can get DSL for individual
use, NO SERVERS ATTACHED. Their policy not mine. I called Bell about 2 years
ago to see if we could get ISDN, DSL, or any form of Broadband and got passed
around to about 10 different sales and tech reps for about a month until it was determined our downstream switch had to be upgraded before any of these could be
made available. Long, sad story made short; I have been on the phone with
various service/tech reps about once a month since and they still can't buy a
clue as to how to set or provision these services in our area.
As far as Cable, we are on an independent cable loop with no outside
access. We don't even get the Fox network on this system. Welcome to the
hills!
