I've been reading all these contributions about this 'smtp' problem. It's
difficult to analyse the problems because they are not persistent. For
exemple, one of my client can ' sometimes' send email throuht her aol
access, but sometimes she gets a 'SMTP error' . She's on a different ip
class at every session, so I guess some of their routers block port 25,
other don't, what do you think, Jeff ?.

I think that anyone has trouble sending out email should be able to completely and clearly describe any error message they get back. They should also be able to forward to the entire email they get back.

Then you stand a _chance_ of figuring it out.

You can always call their ISP and ask outright if they block port 25. It may take a few people, but you can usually find out.

If your box is working right for some of the people some of the time then the problem is either a misunderstanding (the client is doing it wrong) or the isp is blocking port 25 (at least some of the time).

Personally, we don't allow use of our mail-servers for outgoing traffic unless you're an ISP client (dialup, DSL or T-1) or have made special arrangements. Webhosting with us does not get you a server for outgoing mail; it's not that we don't trust you, it's just that it's hard to open it to you and not to spammers.

FWIW.
